Keeping Up With The Kaimanawas was one of the most popular TV shows to hit New Zealand screens this year, and Kelly Wilson’s new book, Stallion Challenges, goes behind the scenes of what has become a Kiwi phenomenon.Stallion Challenges by Kelly WilsonThe Wilson sisters – Vicki, Kelly and Amanda – have been big names on the equestrian circuit in New Zealand for a number of years, and Kelly’s earlier book – For The Love Of Horses – explained in detail their life with horses and their first successful attempts to train wild Kaimanawa horses in 2012. But in 2014, the sisters put forward a new plan – a series of challenges designed to give professional horse trainers an incentive to take on the wild horses and compete with them professionally. The Stallion Challenges were born from a desire to raise awareness of the potential of these graceful and grand animals, and ensure they will live in the hearts of generations to come.Kaimanawa horses are the wild horses that have roamed the central North Island of New Zealand since the 1870s, and have been mustered and culled since the 1990s for conservation and preservation. Around 170 horses are mustered every second year to maintain a managed herd of 300 horses – somewhat less than America’s 80,000 mustangs and Australia’s million or so wild horses, but a challenge in itself for the Department of Conservation and Kaimanawa Heritage Horses, a non-profit charitable society dedicated to the welfare of the Kaimanawa Horses in both the wild and domestic environments.Kelly WilsonKelly Wilson isn’t just a talented writer and horsewoman, she is also an award-winning photographer and recently – along with her sisters – spent 100 days in the US, where she competed in the Extreme Mustang Makeover, one of the largest wild horse events in the world. As well as hanging out with renown horse trainers such as Pat Parelli, Kelly was placed sixth against some of America’s best trainers, and has been invited to compete in Mustang Magic, which only accepts 25 trainers worldwide.Stallion Challenges follows the girls as they accept the responsibility of taking horses from the wild and use kindness and gentleness to encourage them to be champions. But it is more than just a book about horses, it is an inspirational journey of how hopes and dreams can be achieved through courage and hard work. As Kelly says, those who are crazy enough to change the world are the ones who usually do, and anything is possible if you have enough passion, dedication and vision. As a result of the girls’ Stallion Challenges, only 15 horses were sent to slaughter following the 2014 muster – compared to 72 in 2012 – and if that isn’t changing the world, I don’t know what is.The book is filled with hope and elation, mixed with heartbreak and pain, and sprinkled with a great deal of humour and adventure. It is a story of horse conservation and the ability of the human spirit to bond with animals and overcome any obstacle. And it is a journey well worth taking. The Kindle edition is available at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.Copyright ©2015Look to the Stars

Reports in England have announced that Chelsea are preparing an offer to persuade Massimiliano Allegri to abandon his post at JuventusThe Daily Mail have reported that last season’s Premier League winners have now stepped up their efforts to land the Italian this summer and have made contact with Allgeri “at an intermediary level.”Recently Allgeri announced that he intends to leave Italy at the end of his contract with Juventus, which will expire in 2020.It is believed that the former AC Milan coach has grown frustrated with Juventus’ inability to win the Champions League with their fate almost certainly sealed after their 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at Turin on Tuesday. While they have reached the final of Europe’s premier club competition twice in the past three seasons, they were beaten comfortably by both Barcelona and Real.Fiorentina owner: “Ribery played better than Ronaldo!” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso was left gushing over Franck Ribery’s performance against Juventus, which he rates above that of even Cristiano Ronaldo’s.Despite that, Allegri looks on course to win a fourth consecutive Serie A title this season with Juventus having overhauled Napoli at the top of the league standings and now lead by four points with the club itself chasing a seventh straight league crown.Meanwhile, Antonio Conte’s future at Chelsea has been under constant threat this season with the club now looking likely to miss out on Champions League qualification for next season after their 3-1 defeat to rivals Tottenham last weekend.Although it remains uncertain if the post at Stamford Bridge would appeal to Allegri without any Champions League football for next season.
Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) collected water quality samples on Kenai Beaches, on July 3 and 13, that contained levels above Alaska’s enterococci and fecal coliform bacteria limit for recreation and harvesting for consumption of raw fish and shellfish. Sonafrank: “The high bacteria had been found during previous fisheries and we think it’s mostly related to nearby seagulls that are feeding off of the fish as well.” According to SonaFrank, contact with water impacted by enterococci or fecal coliform bacteria may cause stomach aches, diarrhea, or ear, eye, and skin infections. As always, people should cook seafood to a minimum internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit to destroy pathogens, according to the DEC. Until sample results meet water quality standards and DEC lifts this advisory, people should take precautionary measures when recreating. The next sampling is scheduled for this week with results available on July 23. Nancy Sonafrank, Division of Water: “DEC recommends beach users take normal precautions to avoid exposure, such as avoiding swimming in the water, washing after contact with the water, and rinsing fish with clean water after they have been harvested from the area.” This year DEC has planned monitoring and sampling from June through early September. Recently collected samples indicated elevated levels of enterococci bacteria in the marine water at the South and North Kenai River Beaches.

71 Photos 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe has a funky face and diesel power 2019 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison: An off-road animal Chevrolet CorvetteMoving up from the 10th-place slot last year is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. 81 Photos 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison: A tougher off-roader Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a new (well, reborn) entry to both the Honda lineup and the American Made Index. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. The Honda Passport is built in Lincoln, Alabama. 2019 GMC Canyon: A fancier Colorado 4 Hyundai,Enlarge ImageIt’s all in a day’s work for the Jeep Cherokee, the most American-made car in 2019. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. Honda RidgelineAgain keeping the status quo, the Honda Ridgeline maintains third place on the American Made Index. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds. The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. It’s built in Lincoln, Alabama. 1 Tags More From Roadshow 10 Photos 2019 Jeep Cherokee can handle the rough stuff More From Roadshow 49 Photos 2019 Honda Odyssey offers plenty of room and features for families Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches. However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Acura MDX is made in East Liberty, Ohio. Honda PilotDropping down to seventh place for 2019 is the Honda Pilot. Like its two-row Passport sibling, the three-row Pilot offers parent-focused technology like Cabin Talk as well as myriad standard driver-assistance features through the Honda Sensing tech suite. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. The Honda Pilot is made in Lincoln, Alabama. 52 Photos Share your voice Enlarge ImageThere’ll be no Hyundai diesel beach picnics for us Americans, it seems. Cue the sad trombone. Hyundai When we found out that Hyundai was planning on bringing a diesel-powered version of its Santa Fe SUV to the US for 2019, we were pretty stoked. The thing is though, diesel is having kind of a weird time in the US thanks to the Germans and all their shenanigans, and as a result, Hyundai won’t be bringing its oil-burner stateside, according to a report published Monday by Green Car Reports. The 2019 Santa Fe diesel debuted in Geneva earlier this year, and it seemed incredibly promising. We liked the looks of it, and we love the torque and cruising range that a diesel drivetrain offers. But the stink left by Dieselgate on compression-ignition engines in passenger cars is just too much of a risk for the Korean automaker. The interesting thing is that while diesel cars and SUV’s are getting thinner on the ground than ever, more and more trucks are offering smaller diesel options. It wasn’t that long ago that if you wanted a diesel, you had to go with a three-quarter or 1-ton full-size pickup to get it. Now though, all of the big three are offering or planning to offer a small diesel in their half-ton pickups, with Chevrolet going as far as offering one in its midsize Colorado. So, if you need to have a diesel in your crossover or SUV, then you’ll have to go to the folks at Jeep, Land Rover, Jaguar or General Motors for the time being. 69 Photos Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. Forward collision warning with collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control that works even in low-speed traffic, lane-keeping steering assist and road departure mitigation are all standard across the board. Like its MDX counterpart, the RDX is available with the A-Spec styling package. The RDX sports a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Output is stated at 273 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The new RDX is built in East Liberty, Ohio. 68 Photos Honda OdysseyThe feature-rich Honda Odyssey minivan also retains its number-two slot from last year’s list. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The five Republican legislators representing Macomb County residents today supported a resolution in the Michigan House ensuring effective use of state funds provided to address a contaminant identified in the Clinton River and Lake St. Clair. In December, the Legislature agreed to allocate $23.2 million to provide testing, monitoring and technical assistance at more than a dozen sites across Michigan where per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been found in groundwater.State Reps. Diana Farrington, Pamela Hornberger, Peter Lucido, Steve Marino and Jeff Yaroch all supported the budget allocation as well as today’s resolution, which provides a framework to ensure public tax dollars are used in an impactful way.“We need to act quickly and efficiently to address the contamination in Macomb County,” said Marino, of Harrison Township, whose district includes the lake, river and Selfridge Air Base, which is adjacent to two of the contaminated sites. “The resolution we approved today will help form a sensible action plan to guide the efforts of state agencies and the PFAS Action Response Team appointed by Gov. Snyder.”The resolution calls on the PFAS Action Response Team to create a scientific advisory committee made up of experts with various backgrounds.“It’s important to ensure the spending decisions made by the PFAS Action Response Team are backed by science,” said Farrington, of Utica. “The advisory committee will conduct a non-biased scientific risk assessment to determine, among other things, the extent of PFAS contamination in Michigan and who is responsible for its presence.”Hornberger, of Chesterfield Township, said this will also help determine the extent of public exposure.“The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has identified 14 locations in Michigan so far, but I believe this will go much further,” Hornberger said. “PFAS are found in everything from fire foam used by the military to carpets, clothing and upholstery found in all homes.”Additionally, the scientific advisory committee will be asked to conduct an evaluation of the Environmental Protection Agency’s current drinking water health advisory level of 70 parts per trillion.“This is a complex issue that the state of Michigan is likely going to be dealing with for many years to come,” said Lucido, of Shelby Township. “The information gathered by the scientific advisory committee will give us the tools we need to make sure state resources are spent in an effective and efficient manner.”Yaroch, of Richmond, said information gathered by the scientific advisory committee will help guide Michigan’s PFAS response in the future.“Protecting our fresh water is a top priority, and we need to respond quickly to address the risks of PFAS,” Yaroch said.### 06Feb Macomb County legislators laud measure ensuring effective use of PFAS cleanup funds Categories: Lucido News

Following the resignation of BBC director-general George Entwistle on Saturday, head of news Helen Boaden and deputy director of news Stephen Thomas have “stepped aside” for the duration of the ongoing Pollard enquiry into its flagship current affairs show Newsnight.Head of newsgathering Fran Unsworth has been named as acting director of news, while Ceri Thomas, editor of the Today programme will act as deputy director on a temporary basis.Entwistle resigned after only 54 days in the job after a Newsnight report led to former Conservative party treasurer Lord McAlpine being falsely identified as a child abuser. Tim Davie, the director of audio and music who is set to replace BBC Worldwide chief executive John Smith next month, was appointed as acting director-general pending a new round of interviews to find a permanent replacement. Candidates from the last interview round that resulted in the appointment of Entwistle, including the BBC’s former chief operating officer Caroline Thomson and Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards, are expected to be considered.Unsworth stepped aside for the duration of the ongoing Pollard enquiry into the earlier decision of Newsnight not to broadcast and story identifying Jimmy Savile as a child abuser. A separate emergency review on the McAlpine story was delivered by BBC Scotland chief Ken MacQuarrie to Davie yesterday.Davie and BBC Trust chairman Chris Patten have decided that the management of BBC news should be overhauled. Davie also set out plans for the rebuilding of confidence in the BBC at a meeting with the Trust yesterday. Patten meanwhile has already publicly argued for a splitting of the roles of director-general and editor-in-chief of the BBC, a move that would require a rewriting of the BBC’s charter.
YouTube has a “significant” lead over pay video services including Netflix and iTunes, according to research by the New York Film Academy. The poll of 1,546 people – both US and non-US residents – found that 78.6% named YouTube as their service of choice for streaming movies and TV shows.Second place rival Netflix was used by 54.6%, while Vimeo took third place with 28.9% of individuals using the service.Of the respondents, 46.9% said they use streaming sites every day, with 45% using them “every few days.” In a single day, 29.8% said they spend one to two hours streaming video, while 23.5% spend two to three hours a day.Laptops were the most commonly-used device for accessing content, with 78.5% using these, followed by smartphones at 49.4% and tablets at 27.9%.
