LA Clippers win OT thriller over Rockets on special night

first_img“I have not seen him shooting balls like that since he was at Duke and I was at Wake (Forest),” Paul said. “It’s crazy.”The good news for the Clippers (27-14) was that they won this crazy game. The bad news was that it went into overtime in the first place. The Clippers led by 14 points (112-98) with 4:17 to play in regulation, but fell apart and saw Houston’s Marcus Thornton tie the game with 7.4 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied 122-122.“We gave up a 14-point lead with four minutes left,” Rivers said. “It was our doing. But the way we played the last five minutes of the game — we were running the clock out on offense, we were not getting back on defense, we did not match up on defense. We allowed them to get back in the game.“They made shots. Our execution down the stretch in the last couple of plays that let them have 3s was poor.”Then the players got angry.“What I liked about it was that everyone was furious going into overtime,” Rivers said. “We came out, got our composure and played well. … But you cannot play with fire like that. Typically, you do not win games like that.”Paul contributed 28 points, 12 assists, six rebounds and six steals, although he did have five turnovers. Jamal Crawford scored 17 points. DeAndre Jordan, back after missing two games with pneumonia, had 16 points and 15 rebounds. Paul Pierce scored 12 and Wesley Johnson 11.The Clippers made 22 of 37 shots from 3-point range for 59.5 percent. The 22 3-pointers were a franchise high and one shy of the NBA record. “They were just hot, they were making tough shots,” Rockets guard James Harden said. “It wasn’t just one person, it was three or four players.Crawford and Redick hit 3-point baskets at the outset of the overtime to give the Clippers a quick six-point lead (128-122).Dwight Howard led the Rockets (22-21) with 36 points and a whopping 26 rebounds. Thornton scored 23 points off the bench and Harden had 20 points and eight assists. It was a big win for the Clippers on a special night. Crawford spoke at the morning shootaround about what playing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day meant to him.“I think it’s really unbelievable, if you really like think about it,” he said. “He stood for so much and just wanted to see everybody considered equal no matter the color of their skin.“So to be able to play a basketball game or do anything on this day, it’s special knowing the journey we’ve taken to get here — especially him.”Rivers took it deeper.“It’s just really important that we acknowledge Martin Luther King as a great American because that’s what this day is all about,” he said. “And it’s race relations, but it’s also human rights.“I think people, when they think about Martin Luther King, they think race relations and I don’t think they understand that he really was fighting for human rights as much. And he did it as Ghandi did it, in a non-violent way.” Redick, who made his first five 3-point shots, was told what his coach said.“I think I take most losses personal, not just to the Rockets,” he said. “Going back to last year, we had lost five in a row and CP (Chris Paul) and I had talked earlier today just about how frustrating that’s been.“They’re a team that, I think, thinks they’re better than us and rightfully so, given the results over the past season and a half. So it was important for us tonight to kind of — to use a cliche — it was important for us to hit first. They punked us the last game in Houston and we wanted to be more aggressive from the start.”The Clippers lost 107-97 in Houston on Dec. 19.Paul marveled at Redick’s performance. J.J. Redick was sick and tired of losing to the Houston Rockets. Going back to the final three games of last season’s Western Conference semifinals, the Rockets had defeated Redick’s Clippers in five consecutive games ahead of Monday night’s at Staples Center.Redick came through Monday, big-time. He scored a career-high 40 points and made 9 of 12 shots from 3-point range to lead the Clippers to a 140-132 overtime victory over the Rockets before 19,060 in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day thriller at Staples Center.“We told J.J. we were very happy he celebrated Martin Luther King Day so proudly today. That was terrific, scoring 40,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “You could see it early. He had a mission. There was a purpose about him today. He plays like that all the time, but J.J., he was our spirit.“You could see it. He was tired of losing to them and I thought he carried that on the floor and it was personal for him. I thought his leadership with his demeanor was even better than the 40 points.”center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
