But when school closed its doors because of the coronavirus, the club knew it couldn’t stop providing. Girl Up has been creating packs filled with personal care items, thanks to donations from the community and the Syracuse-based group, ‘I Support the Girls.’ But two Union-Endicott High School juniors are taking things a step further, providing feminine hygiene products too. ENDICOTT (WBNG) — Since schools have been closed around the state, districts have been providing things like learning materials and food to their students. “Even in and outside of school, the need doesn’t diminish. Girls will still need these products every month, they rely on them. So many girls rely on school for access to these products like how so many students rely on schools for access to food,” said Madison. The club is still looking for donations of all feminine hygiene products, as well as deodorant, shampoo, and conditioner. A small act of kindness that is making a big difference for many during this time. “With this bathroom initiative, it allows girls to be in a comfortable environment, and an environment that they feel is judgement-free. And where they’re in control, and they have the option to how they want to use these supplies, when they want to use these supplies. I think that’s important that it’s available to them,” said Alessia. “Girl Up is a club full of passionate advocates who advocate, fundraiser, and plan events to raise awareness about reproductive health, access to education, the environment, and so much more,” said Madison. When school was in session, the club stocked the restrooms at the Middle School and High School with feminine hygiene products. “I mean look at us, we’re 16. We thought one night, we were like, ‘Well we can do this.’ And I think that anybody who is passionate about something can go out there and do something,” said Alessia. With help from Endicott Rotary, the packs are being distributed to families in need in the area. Madison and Alessia Stead are co-presidents of the club, Girl Up at UE.
