And we tried to change itreverse it And we did Shekhar Gupta: But with some help from the global financial crisis in 2007 O P Bhatt: Yesbut the change happened much before that It started in 2006 The crisis came in late 2008 So we had started the change much before that And if the State Bank of India was the preferred destination at the time of the crisisit was simply because in those two years we had been able to change the perception about the State Bank of India The brand had got certainly much bigger and much more powerful Shekhar Gupta: Take us to the days of the crisis You were the one bank that didnt seem crisis-ridden In factyou were the one bank in the whole world that seemed to benefit from the crisis All kinds of deposits moved to you O P Bhatt: Wellwe benefited as far as the inflow of deposits were concerned There was a time when we were having walk-in retail deposits for about Rs 1000 crore per day for days on end Thats a large sum of money to handleand so much so that at a point of timewe were having surplus deposits with us of Rs 1 lakh crore Now there is a huge carrying cost to it and that was one of the genesis of this special home loan product…that surplus of one lakh crore Shekhar Gupta: You had to create a pipeline to shove this money into O P Bhatt: We had to create a pipeline If you look at the number of people in this country who need home loansand the number of people who got home loans after this product was launchedlast year we sanctioned three lakh home loansSBI alone And since the entire industry has fallen in line in terms of these productscumulativelymaybe 10 lakh home loans were sanctioned Our average size of a home loan is Rs 12 lakhso look at the customer that we are servicingthe small manthe middle-class personwho otherwise would not have access to home loans Shekhar Gupta: So when did you realise that the financial downturn was an opportunity O P Bhatt: When deposits started flowingand just before this happenedwe had a huge deficit of depositsabout Rs 30-35000 crorewe were borrowing from the Reserve Bank of India almost on a daily basis And this happened because our credit growth in State Bank of India was out-stepping deposit growth So when deposits started flowing into usI thought it was great Because credit growth was reasonably good till that point of timetillof courseit stalled and there was a problem Shekhar Gupta: Let me get more specific Tell us what happened with the Tata Group Tata Group came under pressure at that timethey had made foreign acquisitionsthey had made commitments You held their hand Tatas were one such group Now some time has passed Tell me what happened O P Bhatt: Noas far as loans to Tata Group were concernedthere was no issuebecause even though some of the loan sizes people said were too bigTata is the largest conglomerate in India Our relationship with Tatas goes back more than 100 years107 years So loan-wisethere was no issue The issue was only in terms of credit enhancementwhich we had given to one of their issuesTata Motors Shekhar Gupta: Rightbecause Tata Motors had made that extensive acquisitionwhichat that timelooked like a dumb thing O P Bhatt: I dont knowbecause I had some inside informationwhich is why we went into it We thought what they were doing was really visionaryand we had enough reason to believe that theyll be successful in itit maybe a bit of a long haul But I think a banker should not be someone who takes away the umbrella when it is raining Shekhar Gupta: So you held the umbrella when it started to pour O P Bhatt: We held itwe held it very strongly Shekhar Gupta: Soare you expecting another rights issue now…for government to put in the money againbecause its a good investment O P Bhatt: Yesnot only is it a good investment for the governmentthat is one way of looking at it The other way of looking at it is that we need growth capital The economy needs to grow Thereforebanks need to engage with the economy They cannot engage unless there is growth capital So if the largest bank gets the capital which it thinks it needs for the next twothreefour yearsthen the government would be helping the economy to grow Of coursethey would be getting their investment back And the multiplier effectyou knowmore incomemore taxes Shekhar Gupta: You have looked at the current crisis that has hit public sector bankinginquiriesallegations of corruption So typical of the public sectorisnt it O P Bhatt: Not at all I would sayespecially in the banking industry and in the State Bank of IndiaI cant say that there arent individuals here and there who maybe corruptbut I would say that 99 per cent of the people are squeaky clean Shekhar Gupta: Mr Bhatttell me about your future plans You are unusual in the sense that you have opted out of the race for SEBI chairmanalthough its a wonderful job to have O P Bhatt: Welltemperamentally and experience-wiseI was not equipped for the job I really felt that it was not my cup of tea I dont have any definite plans for the future I know that I will workbecause I need to workI cant live on my pension What I will do is a little hazybut things are beginning to fall in place because there are certain conversations which are going onprivate sectorsmultinationals So something will come hopefully Shekhar Gupta: Looking backdo you have regrets that SBI missed some opportunities or that Indian banks missed some opportunities during the crisis Mr Chidambaram once said that you should have made a bid for Citibank with the share price of $1 O P Bhatt: My view was that to buy into Citibank as an investment is one thingand maybe we could have made so manydepending on how the share price moved And it moved up But I dont think State Bank of India has the bandwidth to control a bank like Citibank What would have happened is that Citibank would have run on its ownwe would have been passive owners And I didnt think that was the right thing to do Shekhar Gupta: But there were acquisition opportunities If not Citibankthere would have been others O P Bhatt: There were a lot of so-called acquisition opportunities which came our way There were several brokersseveral banksseveral institutions which came to us with all kinds of opportunitiesbut that was also the time when you would have found that certain acquisitions went sourand it was very difficult to make out what were the bad apples behind each balance sheet So the question to me wasshould I grow for the sake of growthbecause there is this opportunity Or should I be prudent I didnt want to have growth for growths sake Shekhar Gupta: So it was never that feeling of crisis O P Bhatt: Nonot in India Shekhar Gupta: But you knowthe ironical thing is thathaving done all this in the public sector nowwe are exporting this talent to the private sector Only suggestion I would give you iswhen you negotiate your compensation for the next jobdont let them see your paycheque now O P Bhatt: But I can let them see my house Transcribed by Shatarupa ChakrabortyFor longer versionvisit http://s.wwwindianexpresscom For all the latest Opinion News download Indian Express App More Related NewsBy: AP | Updated: April 20 2017 10:32 pm Aaron Hernandez hung himself and was pronounced dead at a Massachusetts hospital early Wednesday (Source: AP) Top News Aaron Hernandez’s apparent suicide in prison _ just days after the former NFL star was cleared of additional murder charges _ remains shrouded in mystery Why now Is there more to the story What happens to his estate Authorities offered few answers after Hernandez was found hanging from a bedsheet Wednesday in his cell in a maximum-security prison in Massachusetts where he was serving a life sentence for the 2013 slaying of a onetime friend His death came hours before his former New England Patriots teammates visited the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl victory Hernandez 27 died five days after a jury acquitted him in the 2012 shooting deaths of two men whom prosecutors alleged he gunned down after one accidentally spilled a drink on him at a Boston nightclub The apparent suicide left friends family and his legal team shocked and in disbelief Many were searching for an explanation to the tragic end of a young man whose football skills at one point earned him a five-year $40 million contract extension with the NFL’s top franchise “There were no conversations or correspondence from Aaron to his family or legal team that would have indicated anything like this was possible” said his attorney Jose Baez “Aaron was looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence Those who love and care about him are heartbroken and determined to find the truth surrounding his untimely death” Guards found Hernandez shortly after 3 am Wednesday at the state prison in Shirley Correction Department spokesman Christopher Fallon said The former tight end was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about an hour later Fallon said he was not aware of any suicide note and officials had no reason to believe Hernandez was suicidal Otherwise he would have been transferred to a mental health unit Fallon said The Worcester County district attorney’s office and the Correction Department were investigating and Massachusetts’ chief medical examiner was conducting an autopsy The Patriots had no immediate comment and President Donald Trump made no mention of Hernandez at the White House event A star tight end for the University of Florida when it won the 2008 title Hernandez dropped to the fourth round of the NFL draft because of trouble in college that included a failed drug test and a bar fight His name also had come up in an investigation into a shooting Still he was a productive tight end for the Patriots for three seasons He caught 79 passes for 910 yards and seven touchdowns in his second year to help the team reach the Super Bowl But the Patriots released him in 2013 shortly after he was arrested in the killing of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee Hernandez was convicted and sentenced to life in prison Last week Hernandez was acquitted in the 2012 drive-by shootings of two men in Boston As the jury deliberated cameras spied Hernandez blowing kisses to the young daughter he fathered with fiancee Shayanna Jenkins Investigators suggested Hernandez shot Lloyd to keep him quiet about the two earlier killings A lawyer who represents Lloyd’s mother said she’s moving forward with a wrongful-death lawsuit against Hernandez’s estate which includes a home valued at $13 million In the Dorchester neighborhood where Lloyd grew up a family friend of the victim wondered if Hernandez could no longer bear the weight of his crime and his squandered potential “I just think it got to him _ the guilt” Mixson Philip said “Each man has to live with himself You can put on an act like nothing happened but you’ve got a soul You’ve got a heart” Friends also were grieving in Connecticut where Hernandez was raised “Especially after him getting acquitted of the double murder That was a positive thing in our minds” said Alex Cugno who grew up with Hernandez in Bristol “I don’t believe that he would have killed himself It just doesn’t add up” For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Top NewsBy: unnecessary controversies simply because the general public are not privy to the whole truthOut of respect for everyone involved I followed the legal path to resolve the matter in question so as to keep it private It was a breach of ethics to reveal the contents of a private legal notice Dignified silence is dignified up to a point but there comes a time when the silence needs to be broken to protect one’s name family and imageThe crux of the matter is that the mail id [email protected] does NOT belong to me I had filed a complaint in this regard with Mumbai Cyber Crime cell on 12 December 2014 when I learnt of this impersonator communicating with said person I have absolutely NO CONNECTION with this ID The entire issue stems from a case of identity theft which has carried over to me My complaint was reactivated on March 5 2016 and the crime unit has made headway in tracking this person down Once that is done the matter can be laid to restAnd finally I believe that mental health is a grave and crucial issue which merits serious discussion I would never address it flippantly nor use it as a personal attack Any allegation to the contrary is a misrepresentation of facts I was
