Metallica Returns To Massachusetts After Eight Long Years [Photos]

first_imgPhoto: ATS Photography On Friday night, the legendary Metallica took to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, marking the group’s first show in Massachusetts in eight years. Massachusetts was the fifth stop in Metallica’s WorldWired Tour in support of the Californian band’s tenth studio album, Hardwired To Self-Destruct—a double-album that was released last November and features twelve new songs that pick up right where 2008’s Death Magnetic left off. (The deluxe edition also features a third disc with over a dozen live recordings from various shows).12-Year-Old Son Of Metallica’s Robert Trujillo Debuts With Korn For South American Tour [Videos]Compared to the original all-thrash metal band they used to be, the band’s recent music displays an overall more balanced sound that lends itself to broader audiences, seemingly resulting in more album and concert ticket sales. Undoubtedly, Hardwired To Self-Destruct was a huge commercial success, debuting at #1 on Billboard 200 and taking the title of best-selling metal album of the year. Surprisingly, it was also the third largest album debut of all of 2016, proving that metal is certainly not dead. On the contrary, it is alive and well, reiterated by the boisterous Boston crowd that gathered at the New England Patriots’ home turf on Friday evening.Metallica Released Eleven New Music Videos Yesterday [Watch Them All]The show started with two songs off their new album, title track “Hardwired” and “Atlas, Arise!” before dropping into the classic “For Whom the Bell Tolls” off of the 1984 album Ride The Lightning. Metallica played three tunes from the band’s sophomore album, which went six times platinum and had a profound effect on the metal scene in America and across the globe. The remainder of the setlist weaved between hits of old and new and gave fans from all generations a solid representation of their discography. The band also played five songs from the self-titled album Metallica, often referred to as the “Black Album,” which features the infamous songs “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters,” both of which have become staples in Metallica sets over the years.Watch Metallica, Jimmy Fallon, and The Roots Perform “Enter Sandman” With Classroom InstrumentsIn a time where our nation seems to be more divided than ever, we are fortunate to have the often-thrashing and always-emotive music of Metallica to provide a soundtrack that allows us to let our aggressions in a socially acceptable way. That seemed to be the uniting theme as lead singer James Hetfield addressed the crowd: “It doesn’t matter how old you are, where you come from, what religion you follow, who you voted for. If you are here, you are Metallica Family.”If you ever had any doubt at how uniting this message can be, just look at the list of stadiums across North America that Metallica have been jam-packed with fans in black T-shirts and ripped jeans. Despite the “angry asshole” stigma metal fans sometimes get, the community showed its true colors Friday night, coming together and head banging to music new and old in complete harmony. It inspires hope in humanity to see sweaty tatted-up dudes in the mosh pits, helping each other of the ground and holding up lost wallets, phones, watches, and missing shoes—lots and lots of missing shoes. An occasional flying cup of ice cooled the crowd whether they liked it or not. On the way out of the gates, it was nothing but high-fives and hugs. The ‘Metallica Family’ is alive and well.Check out the complete set list below, along with the full photo album from photojournalist Adam Straughn (ATS Photography).Setlist: Metallica | Gillette Stadium | Foxborough, MA | 5/19/17Hardwired, Atlas, Arise!, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Fuel, The Unforgiven, Now That We’re Dead > Full Band Drum Solo, Moth Into Flame, Wherever I May Roam, Halo On Fire > Kirk Hammet Solo > Rob Trujillo Solo (Chris Cornell Tribute), Motorbreath, Sad But True, One, Master of Puppets, Fade to Black (‘Eye of the Beholder’ intro), Seek & DestroyE: Fight Fire with Fire, Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman (‘Frayed Ends of Sanity’ outro)[cover photo image by Josh Skolnik / Adam Straughn] Photo: ATS Photographycenter_img Load remaining imageslast_img read more

Man Utd Tops Clubs Rich List

first_imgManchester United have regained top spot in the Deloitte Money League for the first time in more than a decade. The Red Devils, benefiting from a return to the Champions League, posted a record revenue of £515.3million over the course of the 2015-16.That was enough to knock Real Madrid off the top spot after 11 years at the summit. The Spaniards slipped to third, despite returning their own record of £463.8m – an increase of almost £45m. Barcelona move into second. Figures were up at Old Trafford across the board, with improved revenues showing in the matchday, broadcast and commercial sectors.Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: ‘In recent years, (United’s) ability to secure commercial partnerships with value in excess of that achievable by their peers has been the crucial factor in enabling the club to regain their place at the top of the Money League.‘They’ll face strong competition from FC Barcelona and Real Madrid to retain the top spot in next year’s edition, due to the lack of Champions League football, the weakening of the Pound against the Euro and, over the longer term, as other clubs enter the commercial market demanding similar deals, using United as the precedent.’Over the course of the Money League’s 20-year existence, United are the only side other than Real to have held top spot, and the huge wealth of English clubs was evident again in 2015-16, as eight teams made the top 20.Manchester City moved into the top five for the first time, their revenues up £40m to just under £400m, while Leicester made their debut appearance in the list. The £128.7m generated by the Foxes during their surprise title-winning season is almost five times more than the club recorded during the 2013-14 campaign.Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all had the money to be placed in the top 10, Tottenham finished 11th and West Ham also made the cut, having seen revenues rise by more than a third.Combined revenues for the clubs who made the top 20 grew a whopping 12 per cent to £6.4billion, of which eight Premier League sides contributed £2.4b.Further growth is expected from English team’s next year, with Deloitte senior manager Tim Bridge predicting almost total domination of the Money League top 30 next term.‘We can expect the growth rate to be strong again next year as the Premier League clubs benefit from increased revenue due to their record television contracts,’ he said, referring to the £5.14b TV rights deal which began at the start of the current campaign.‘There is a strong chance that almost all Premier League clubs will be in the top 30 clubs next year.’The report, put together by business advisers Deloitte, uses figures extracted from the annual financial statements of the company or group in respect of each club.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Unseeded Nigerian Quadre Upsets Number Eight 8 at Lagos…

first_imgBarakat Oyinlomo Quadre Femi SolajaUnseeded Nigeria’s Barakat Oyinlomo Quadre was the hero of the day at the ongoing Lagos Open Tennis tournament at the Lagos Lawn Tennis court after the brilliant win against number eight seed, Serbian Curovic Tamara who could not continue the second round match in the second set.Against the form book, the Nigerian with full support from the stand was in her best performance as she dominated play before Tamara signaled to the referee that she could not continue the match, Qaudre had already won the first set 6-2. The highly rated Tamara complained of fever thus made the match to be called off and the Nigerian land in the next round which will continue this morning at the same venue.”It’s amazing winning this match and qualified for my first-ever quarter final of the Lagos Open Tennis. It’s like a dream come true for me because before this competition, I had it at the back of my mind that I want to get to at least the quarter final stage of this year tournament. I was a set away from achieving this last week during the first leg as I lost my second round match in the third set. Though disappointing, I had to brace up for the challenges ahead.“I am so happy that I achieved my set target for the Lagos Open this year and going forward, I am aiming higher for better performance that will get me to play in the final. “I’m so glad with the motivation I received from my parent and my coach. My dad encouraged me that if Sada Nahimana, the Burundian lady, who won the first leg Women’ Singles, who is incidentally my roommate at the ITF Centre in Morocco, could get to this height, I too could also achieve that,” Quadre said after the heroic feat last night. In other top matches, the ambition of winner of Women’s Singles in the first leg, Sada Nahimana to repeat the feat of winning the tournament back to back was cut short abruptly as the unseeded Burundian star lost gallantly to tournament number 4 seed, Slovenia’s Kolar Nastia. In another development, Nigerian youths are to enjoy moments of training and tournament at the event courtesy of the partnership between the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Genesis Tennis Academy, Arizona, USA.Convener of the youth clinic, former Nigerian tennis champion, Jonathan Igbinovia told journalists that the clinic and mini tournament became very important in order to bring back the lost glory of the sport as was in his playing days in Nigeria before he retired.According to him, the LOC of the Lagos Open Tennis is supporting the project by creating a platform for the youth to train and compete during the ITF World Tour.“About 80 youths will take part in the clinic, which will be in two stages. The first stage will be a two-day training between Thursday and Friday, while a mini tournament for these youths to showcase what they have learnt will hold between Saturday and Sunday. They will be given prizes and we are planning to expose winners to international training at the Genesis Tennis Academy in Arizona.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more
